Suey Sunshine's Halfway House

Back in action! Yesterday, a couple brought two little girl kittens that their woofie had found in their garden into the clinic mum and our friend Greta work in. It is comparatively rare for a ginger kitten to be a girl, so these two are a bit special. Mum brought the girls home after her shift to get them cleaned up, wormed, and flea free, before they went to Greta's house where they will stay in foster care.

About an hour after mum got home, Greta phoned her to say a lady had dropped off another pair! These two were boys, and were the twins of the girls. They were found in the same laneway, so are clearly related. The little ginger boy had slightly runny eyes, so the boys and the girls are being kept seperate for the moment, while they are pumped full of immune boosters. In the 24 hour period there has been no sneezing or nasal discharge, and no crusties formed on his eyes so we're hoping something just irritated his eyes. This is a picture of the boys having a snuggle with Greta after they were cleaned up. We think half the fleas in Sydney were living on this family! Greta reports that all four are eating well, and seem very happy to be itch-free and warm. There was lots of rain last night and most of today, so we are glad they are safe and warm inside. We're hoping they will be able to go to the Cat Protection Society when they are old enough to be desexed, but if the little boy has a kitty flu we will do it privately to make sure it's not passed to the other kitties there.

Kitten

This is Kitten the Vet Cat. He is the one who used to come into our courtyard and chew our cat grass and pull faces at us through the windows before it was enclosed. And also before mum and her black thumb killed off our cat grass. Mum loves Kitten. He rubs on her bag and gets his smells on it. As soon as mum gets home, I rub on her bag to replace it with my smells! Kitten was fascinated with Bertie, and Bertie was not bothered by him one little bit. Kitten even used to play with Bertie's poop... there is no accounting for taste! Bertie is now in his foster home with Greta, and is making friends with her kitty Raj. Raj slept the whole night outside Bertie's crate!

We had a couple of comments about Bertie's owners, and wanted to assure everyone that we tried everything we could think of to find them. He was not microchipped or tattooed, and did not have any other identifying features. He was on display for several days at the clinic to see if someone recognised him. There was a ring around of all the local vets to see if he sounded familliar and to register his details, and also of the pet search groups. Greta spoke with the shop and cafe owners up the road and to people who do a lot with rabbits. Mum has been scouring all the internet sites and classifieds where people commonly put lost ads, and backdating the date peramaters. According to the biggest search company, PetSearch, they get an average of two found bunny reports a day, but hardly ever get any lost bunny reports. They said most people seem to be of the mindset that once a bunny is missing it will not be found, and don't look.

The man who brought Bertie into the clinic said he had been in the car park for at least three days, which means he went missing at least two weeks ago including the time he was in the clinic. Because he was so sweet and seemed like he had known love, we really wanted to find his original owners. After he had been in the clinic for 10 days, mum and Greta were told to get rid of him or it would be done for them, so they needed to act. Being found at the golf course, mum also thinks there is a pretty good chance that he was left there and the original owners don't want to find him. It's a sad situation, but mum and Greta are just trying to do the best thing for Bertie. Knowing that it is hard to re-home rabbits, especially males, in Sydney (one of the rescue groups mum spoke with have had several available for eight months) they thought the best option was to get him into a foster care situation and listing him for adoption while continuing to look for an original owner.

Branching Out

This is Bertie. Isn't he cute! He came into the vet clinic mum works in last week. Some doggies sniffed him out in a golf course car park, and their dad was able to catch him and bring him in. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to find his original owners. It is sad because from his behaviour, he seems to be a bunny who has known a lot of affection and love in the past. He is very calm, and has a sweet temperament.

Mum's friend and colleague Greta will be fostering Bertie while they try and find him a new Forever home through his PetRescue listing here. He is going to know a lot of loving and affection while he is there, let us tell you! It will give him a good chance to fatten up, too, as he is a bit on the skinny side. We wish we could meet him. He probably smells really interesting!

Georgie has Left the Building

Today was my Gotcha Day! I was picked up in the prettiest of pink carriers. I also have to show you something my foster mum is very impressed with. It is the scar from my spay surgery. Can you see it? I'll get a bit closer for you. The vet who did my operation is a specialist in microsurgery. The scar in on my side, and it is teeny tiny. It's size means it was a less invasive surgery, and I will recover much quicker. Hermione also had the same tiny scar on her side. It was the first time our foster mum had seen the scar on the side, and the first time she had ever seen one so little!I also have some fun news to tell you. My new family really liked the name Luna for a little white kitten. So that is going to be my name!I was also a milestone kitten. I was the first kitten adopted that had the Suey's Safehouse logo on their paperwork. My foster mum is very much a Photoshop beginner, but she was happy with it. The kitty is from a photo of Suey. Foster Mum's friend Greta (the lady who saved Harry, Ron and Hermione from the blue stuff on the day they were found) has suggested adding some paw prints to the bottom, so she will work on that over the weekend. Big Days!

Tomorrow is a really big day for me. I am having my ladygardenectomy, and I have a family that sounds absolutely lovely coming to meet me. My foster mum put our ads up on PetRescue.com.au, and within 5 minutes, she called about me! So my foster mum is in a little bit of shock that it all happened so quickly!

I would really appreciate it if you could send a purr the way of my brother and myself tomorrow. I would love a home for Christmas.

The Many Faces of Harry

Hello my friends. Hermione and I are still trying to find our Forever Homes. Hopefully Suey's Safehouse will get approved for the Pet Rescue site very soon, and then we can get a lot more publicity.Today we went to stay in a crate with our friend Rani (a little black kitten our foster mum introduced you to a few weeks ago) for a few hours while Mum was working. We will keep going with mum so that more people can meet us. Hermione and I are going in for our desexing surgeries in a week- on Christmas Eve! That's not a very fun gift, Santa Paws!

We are disappointed that our first home did not work out. The family had a cat since before their daughter was born, so I guess she developed an immunity early on. Their cat passed away a few months ago, so the intervening time must have been enough for her to lose her resistance and react badly to us. I know that we will find an even better home the second time around! If you know anyone in Sydney who is thinking of adding a kitten to their family, please let them know about us!

Big Days

It was a big day for us here in Suey's Safehouse. We've registered as a rescue group on PetRescue.com.au, and that is our name. There, we will be able to promote our foster bebbehs, and hopefully get them more exposure. It is the Australian equivalent of PetFinder, and over 47 000 pets have been rehomed through the site.We are really hoping it will help Harry and Hermione find their Forever Home.It was a big day for another reason, too. Here is little Freddie.He used litter for the first time! He did a giant wee and then covered it up. Dad thinks the cutest thing about them using the little litter container is that they don't even really know why they are doing it. It is all instinct. I am inclined to agree:)
