Fui Friday

Hey dudes,

So, we still don't have a whole lot of answers. We thought it was looking like I had pancreatitis, but the latest tests were leading away from that. We're waiting on one more round of results and then our vet will probably refer us off to the university. I also had a test come back saying I was FIV+. I tested negative as a kitten and had an FIV vaccination, so we're hoping it is the leftover antibodies from the vaccine. When our vet was speaking to the lab they were a bit concerned that I tested positive years after the vaccine, so this weekend they are doing further testing to try and determine whether it was the antibodies or the virus dna that the test picked up. We do think it's very unlikely that I am actually FIV+. I have never been in a fight or received a fight injury, so the only way I could have been infected is from my catmum. For me to be positive now would have to mean that both me and Suey had false negatives on our test, which is unlikely according to what we've read. But we're still feeling the stress a little bit.

Our lovely friend Miss Huffle Mawson is celebrating her 1000th post, and is holding a commentathon. She is donating 25 cents to the RSPCA Vic for each comment, and is hoping to reach 1000 comments. Please go and visit her, and leave a comment. She is one of our very favourite ladycats, and if you haven't met her already we know you will like her a lot.

Have a great weekend :)

Aw Fui, I hope they can finally come up with an answer for you.

When my guardian angel Jonathan ::bows head in honor:: was tested during a routine blood test for a dental procedure, he was found to be FIV+ and mom freaked out! He had been living with mom for 7 years! But before he lived with us he was a big ol' tom cat in the neighborhood and our vet did not routinely screen for it (only Feline lukemia and stuff). Anyway...he never fought with any of our other kitties and so our vet convinced mom that all would be ok as long as he wasn't a fighter. He never passed the virus to anyone else even though he lived in the house with us and we shared everything.

He outlived any other cat my mom has known and lived to be into his 20's. One of the most special cats mom has ever known.

Anyway, we will purr that you are not positive for FIV but wanted you to know it will be ok no matter what.

Purrs and hugs,

Cory (with pearly white shiny teeth!)

Fui - mom says that the vaccine will make the test come back positive. She has never read that it eventually wears off - her friend Kelly has an FIV+ cat and her vet told her that if she vaccinated her other cats, the test would come back positive.

We will continue purrin' that they figure it out....

Hi Fui. That's a great shot of you looking most handsome!

Test results can be off/misleading. Even though Yuu-Chan tested negative for FeLV at 7 months, he did indeed have it. Our vet now recommends doing all these tests twice. It doesn't sound to us either like you have FIV, though.

Whatever it is, we hope they will eventually pinpoint and eradicate. In the meantime, we hope you're doing OK.
Purrs,
The Chans (and the rest of the gang too)

Fui, continued purrs to you! We'll keep our fingers crossed that test results come back just fine, and no, it doesn't sound like you're really FIV+ at all.

It must be very frustrating to not have any answers, Fui! My human has gone through the same thing with me for YEARS - I do not eat much and there has been no definitive answer as to why.

Fui you big boofa boy! What a mystery you are! This FIV+ business is a nuisance and we hope you test negative. The vaccine for FiV hasn't taken off in the UK precisely because of the confusion over tests picking up antibodies to the vaccine or the actual virus. If you do test positive, know that cats with FiV have very low transmission rates and can live safely and happily with FiV neg cats. We know of several cats who live with FiV+ cats and all stay healthy. The strains of virus the vets and scientists use for reference were intially compiled using extremly virulent. laboratory strains of the FiV virus and those strains don't reflect the strains seen in the "wild" which are much weaker. Have you had X rays to see if you have anything tiny and sharp stuck in your tum?

We are sending you lots of love and purrs and a hug for your Mum too.

Dear Fui and family,
it must be exhausting to not know what it is that needs treating. Just keep giving the kids wholesome, nutritious food and any supplements they may need and love and know you are doinf your best.
Fingers crossed it's all solved soon, Fui, and it all heals quick!
